The Spirit of Giving

It’s been a very busy couple of weeks lately. It felt like I don’t have enough time for myself because of my busy and hectic schedule. It has been several days since I had quality time for myself. Most of the times I ended up doing stuff for my family, friends, and also for work at the office.

At times like this I felt that my spirit of giving is being really tested. How much would you give to other people who are in need of your help? Here in Indonesia, we have a saying that when you give something to other people, give it sincerely and willingly. If you can’t give it sincerely and willingly then don’t bother to give at all.

Even if you can’t give it sincerely and willingly, but still want to give something to other people, it is said that the action won’t bring any good to both the giver and the receiver. Although not all Indonesian people believe this kind of stuff, it is still common practice here in Indonesia.

I remember another word of wisdom, said by a dear Pastor that I know of. He said that It doesn’t really matter if you can’t give willingly and sincerely. What you should ask yourself is the reason why, in spite of being insincere and unwilling, you still want to give anyway.

What matters most is that despite of being unwilling and insincere, you still want to give to other people because you know that IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO. That way by doing so, you sacrifice something of yours to give to other people, and that is what really counts.

I don’t know about you but I found it quite enlightening and thought provoking. I wish this can be enlightening for you too. Good luck and God bless.
