Not Yet Halfway Through
Here I am, back at the front of my computer, writing another entry on my blog after two days away visiting my relatives. I can’t tell you how I miss my computer or rather, my online persona and life, even for only two days.
Of course with internet connectivity and reach these days, the relatives that I visited actually have a faster internet connection than what I have at home. I can still check my e-mails and even my Facebook account, but still it is not the same.
Many people nowadays use Gmail for their primary e-mail address, partly because they give you a huge virtual space for free, but in my opinion also because of the backup issues. If you downloaded your e-mail to your computer, you have to backup them manually.
Using Gmail, I don’t really think backup will become as critical an issue, because Gmail backs up their server, where the e-mails are, regularly. I have a Gmail account, call me old-fashioned, but I still prefer downloading my e-mails to my computer in order to store them locally as opposed to storing them online.
The downside of this is that I have to make sure I do backups of my important e-mails regularly, and also whenever I am away for an extended period of time, such us during this holiday season which is not yet halfway through, I have to make sure I don’t get any e-mails with a large attachments.
Why is that so? Because the ISP where I registered my e-mail address only give 10MB mailbox to their basic users. Pretty small by today’s standard, 2 e-mails with 5MB attachment each can render my mailbox non operational and makes me unable to receive any e-mails since my mailbox is full.
So far, there’s been minimal problem since I am able to download those e-mails each day. But whenever I am on an extended period of holiday, away from home, that’s when I got worried. 10MB of mailbox space seems very small at times like this.
I do have several options though, such as forwarding every mail to another e-mail address, asking my ISP to give me a bigger mailbox (with a fee obviously), or I can go and change my e-mail address. I can even opt to go mobile and buy a notebook so I can download my mailbox wherever and whenever I go. Assuming of course that the place I am visiting has an Internet connection.
Well, at the moment, I don’t think I’ll change anything just yet. I will give it some more thoughts and time before I decided to do anything. Oh well… See you around for now.
