American Idol Top 9

Chikezie EzeOh dear, it has been a while since I last wrote my take of the American Idol Contestants’ Performance here. I sure missed a lot of opportunity to write about them. My last post about AI is about a week ago, when there are still 11 contestants left. But now they are only 9 contestants left from that 11, time sure flies fast, doesn’t it?

The last 2 weeks saw David Hernandez, Amanda Overmyer, and Chikezie failed to get enough votes to keep them staying. I already write about why I think David Hernandez is the first to go on my last post about American Idol. Actually it is better considered a semi-post rather than a full post about American Idol, but you get the idea. Oh, I also happened to read somewhere in the internet that David Hernandez is auditioning for a part in Broadway’s hit musical ‘Rent’.

Amanda Overmyer is the next contestant to go home after David Hernandez, who despite her ‘unique-ness’ still cannot garner enough votes to keep her in the title race. Mainly, I think it is because of her choice of song last week. She stubbornly chooses to keep singing in that rock-esque way for most of her performance that perhaps people just grow tired of it.

Unfortunately I didn’t catch the show this week, mainly because half an hour before the show started, I fell asleep on top of my keyboard. I guess those long hours waking up until the wee hours of the morning are finally taking its toll on me. And this serves also as a lesson, no matter how much fun or important blogging and making money from the internet is, your health is top priority.

But I did catch the result show though. So I still got to see a review of the contestants’ performances. I don’t know if it is just me, or if there are people who feel the same way, but the farther this season goes on, the more I lose interest, and it just doesn’t feel like it used to be. I mean, singing songs that are made on the year of their birth should bring us a varied song genre and that should be interesting to watch.

On the contrary, most of the contestants fail to impress the judge (and the audience in my opinion, myself included) with their song choice. At this point, although I don’t really like David Cook, but I have to give him credit on his song choice and performances. He doesn’t pick songs just because he loves the songs very much, but he knows that the audience and the judge love them too. He indeed could be the one to win the competition this year.

I think showing more of the contestants’ life and personality is good, but I have to admit I prefer if they stick to previous years’ format, where every week they invite different popular artists and let them coach the contestants to sing whether the artist’s own songs or other artists’ songs. I especially love it when they invited Andrea Bocelli to the show. It is things like this that makes the show more interesting in my opinion. Luckily they decided to invite Dolly Parton to guide the contestants next week, which is welcome news indeed.

Regarding the result show, I still remember that Simon once said that Kristy Lee Cook will only make it to Idol Top 10, but apparently he is wrong, just like when he told David Archuleta that he’d be surprised if David had hand picked his song for this week show. But as it happened, it was Chikezie who is going home, perhaps because of an unsuitable song choice on his part, although I think he deserve to stay longer in the competition. What is it with these contestants? They should learn to pick better songs for their performance, because frankly I think Simon is saying the word ‘wrong song choice’ a little bit too much lately.

But with Dolly Parton to guide the contestants, I hope it will be interesting to watch the show once more. I’ll keep my fingers crossed until next week. Later then!

Me too, feel not interested enough to watch the show this season. At first I couldn’t wait to watch it every Tuesday and Wednesday night, but for the last two weeks… it’s just not entertaining for me. Especially because of the choice of songs, just like you said. He he. Oh well, hopefully next week will be better!

Andrea Bocelli is truly a master. He has a super great voice that sounds heavenly.::*
