A Very ‘Late’ Birthday

A have a very interesting experience today. It stall started yesterday when a cousin of mine sent a text message concerning my other cousin which happened to be on holiday here in Indonesia. Because she and her parents live in a far away country, we didn’t get to meet very often and it has been 2 years since we last met her.

Her holiday here is coming to an end and she and her parents have to go back to their home next week, so we are planning to meet together, grab a bite and have some fun before tonight. My cousin suggested that we have dinner together at the Hard Rock Cafe Jakarta.

Because almost all of us worked full time, my cousin said that we will all have dinner on Friday night, after office hours. I agreed and I arrived half an hour late after the appointed time since work is holding me back at the office. When I arrived, my cousin who arranged the event have already arrived with her younger sister. Not very long after that, my cousin’s husband arrived.

My cousin told me that my other cousin (the one who is going home next week) is going to the old place, and so she is being picked up by my cousin’s mom. While waiting for her to arrive, we ordered first. I ordered the ‘Rock Chops’ and to be frank I didn’t like it very much. While I was finishing my meal, my going-home-next-week cousin arrived, and there we go exchanging hugs. The atmosphere was quite light tonight with much of the customers wearing just plain t shirts.

After that she ordered her meal and we all talked and joked together. You know, the usual stuff. Apparently my event-arranger cousin is planning a surprise for my going-home-next-week (ghnw) cousin. She told the waiter that my ‘ghnw’ cousin is having her birthday today (actually it was last week), and the MC announced it to the other customers.

At first I thought that there are another person with the same name as my ‘ghnw’ cousin having her birthday today, so you can imagine my surprise when a waiter stopped by our table holding a made-up birthday cake complete with candles.

He then congratulate my ‘ghnw’ (which is as surprised as I am) and asked her to stand up in her seat and then the waiter asked the whole customers around our table to clap and sing ‘Hapy Birthday’ for her. And then the waiter asked her to blow the candles with a straw.

After that, the waiter asked her to take a bite out of her birthday cake (it was actually a brownies cake with ice and whipped cream all over it). When she bowed down to take a bite, the waiter pushed the cake up her face which made it covered in cream.

You can guess what happened after that. My ‘ghnw’ cousin is chasing another waiter with the cake at her hand (she’s unsuccessful though). When she got back to our table she suddenly slapped her full-of-cream hand at my face and my event-arranger cousin. After that it was my event-arranger cousin husband’s turn to be creamed.

It was such a fun and memorable night that left all of us laughing and forgetting our troubles if only for a while. She might be going home next week, but she will have lots and lots of stories to tell her friends back home. Goodbye and have a safe journey, little cousin!
